In a world where widespread unity is in short supply, parents face the challenging task of creating unity within their families. And in family settings that involve multiple parenting partners and dispersed households, the task is even more daunting.
Despite the challenges, we yearn for a unison family. A family where parenting is fully aligned. Where everyone lives in harmony. Where shared values and consistent behavior help guide each child to mature adulthood.
My first message to you is, you can do it! It’s possible to have a unison family! Is everything perfect all the time? No. That’s not realistic, and when everything looks perfect in a family, I get suspicious about what’s wrong and what’s hidden. But in scenarios where family members get off-kilter with each other, it’s possible to re-align, repair, forgive, and move forward. When outside challenges threaten, the family pulls together.
A Unison Family is resilient.
To operate together, you need a plan. Parenting partners start the process by realizing where they came from, leveraging their experiences to create a shared set of core values, and establishing policies and framework aligned with those values.
Parenting partners create clear yet flexible rules, consequences, and rewards. Children can even participate in parts of the process. Adults transition from expecting certain behaviors to simply inspecting compliance to approved values and behaviors.
A Unison Family has a plan.
The ultimate goal is to produce a mature adult from an immature child. The child soaks in values. The child gradually learns and practices making decisions with guardrails to protect them through the most consequential decisions. Parenting partners prepare the child physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, and spiritually for a complete, mature adult life.
When parenting partners balance expressions and practice of unconditional love with an executable framework to guide good behavior, they give their child the best chance for positive outcomes. The result is proven by research and experience. Of course, we are talking about probabilities, as any child can still go wrong or right. But on the whole, balancing love and limits produces the most prepared humans.

Meet Parenting Expert Cecil Taylor
Cecil Taylor is a parenting expert who taught parenting classes to 700 families in his church over a 15-year span. He also spent more than 30 years in church youth ministry. Cecil offers that expertise and experience of working with those children and families through his books, videos, speaker services, blogs, newsletters, and companion products.
His book, Unison Parenting, won the prestigious 2025 Independent Press Award in the Parenting/Family category. Placing first in this secular international competition proved Cecil's point that its techniques, while Christian in background, can benefit all families. The book also won the 2025 Living Water award for Christian nonfiction.
